Meet the MomShredHers

By Beth Orehosky

We spoke with MomShredHers founder Sara Kennedy to learn how a spark of curiosity from her daughter transformed into a supportive community of moms, now more than 15 strong, who meet up regularly to try something new and rediscover their sense of adventure!

When her daughter was five years old, Sara Kennedy did something most parents only talk about, she learned to skate with her daughter. What started as a simple way to share time together quickly turned into something so much bigger: joy, confidence, rediscovering play, and the spark of an idea that would eventually become MomShredHers.  As she kept showing up at the skatepark, something interesting happened.
Mom after mom would approach her and say:

“I wish I could do that.”

That sentence repeated itself so often that she finally realized: moms didn’t lack interest, they lacked a space that felt welcoming, judgment-free, and supportive enough to try something new....So Sara created one, and MomShredHers was born!

A Space for Moms

While Sara started skating as a way to learn alongside her daughter, MomShredHers has grown into something deeper, a place where moms discover what it feels like to try something new for themselves.  Kids are always welcome at meetups, and plenty come to cheer or ride along. However, the heart of the group is about giving moms a place to build confidence, connect with each other, and rediscover their own sense of adventure.

“Kids aren’t actually the center of this meet up. Moms are the ones taking the kids to all their sporting events, so this is a space for moms to do something for themselves, to find themselves after motherhood.”

Where Failing Is Encouraged

From day one, MomShredHers was designed to feel different.  Not competitive.  Not intimidating.  Not performative.  Just real women showing up exactly as they are.  Their meetups are filled with laughter, cheering, shaky first attempts, tiny breakthroughs, and the kind of encouragement you rarely see these days.

Sara describes it as:

“...an encouraging space where it’s okay to fail. It’s okay to not be good at something...and it’s so fun to watch all the moms improve. It’s a space where we’ve all made new friends.”

One of her highlights?

Showing up to a male-dominated skatepark… and the moms taking over.

“There’s lots of cheering and laughing, and usually the guys come join us because we’re having so much fun.”

Courage, Pads, and One Big Drop-In

Every adventure community has an iconic moment, and for Sara, it was learning to drop into a bowl for the first time.  She set it as her New Year’s goal, and finally sent it at a GRLSWIRL meetup, after a crew of girls rallied around her, cheering her on.  The fear of falling was real.  So was the support.  Once she realized that wiping out isn’t that bad with the right pads and helmet, something clicked:  Trust yourself.  Lean in.  Try the thing that scares you.  It’s the exact spirit MomShredHers brings to moms everywhere.

What’s Next for MomShredHers?

The group meets once a month in South Orange County, always with the same mission:  Have fun and inspire other moms to try something new.  There’s no pressure, no perfection, no performance, just a supportive space where women come alive!  They typically see 10–15 moms at each meetup, and the community continues to grow.  Moms interested in joining the next event can follow along at @momshredhers on Instagram.
