Beginner Skateboard buying guide

Written by Louisa

Buying your first skateboard can be a daunting task - entry level skaters can often be overwhelmed by the selection, the jargon and brand choice. This is why we decided to curate a quick and easy beginner-friendly buying guide for those looking to push off best foot forward.

The two main choices for a beginner skateboard are Brand and Size. Standard complete skateboards are 7.75, but width becomes more important once tricks are introduced. A slightly wider skateboard deck makes balance just that lil bit easier.

Skateboard wheel choice at entry level can also have a big impact on learning. Softer 85A wheels have more grip which makes balance easier, as opposed to standard skatepark wheels which are a harder 99A and designed for speed more than balance.

We recommend spending around £30-£60, brand wise this is where the price will vary but it’s always best to invest in a quality deck and components. It all depends on if you’re after a complete skateboard to start off with or if you’re after a skateboard deck to keep and upgrade.

Skate brands like Blind, Birdhouse, Enuff, Tricks, Heart Supply and Sushi offer a great range of budget friendly beginner options. Moving up towards the more bouj end of the scale we usually go for Girl, Creature, Enjoi, Flip, Real or Santa Cruz.
