TRY IT – A FLINTA* Skate Documentary
Written by Samantha Bache
On 15 January, the FLINTA* skate documentary TRY IT will be released – a 45-minute film that captures what skateboarding feels like for FLINTA* people and how an empowering, community-driven scene is growing in Hanover.
More than a skate film, TRY IT is an invitation: to show up, to try something new, and to push past fear together.
TRY IT asks a simple but powerful question: Why is skateboarding so special?
Through honest moments, shared struggles, and small victories, the film explores skateboarding not just as a sport, but as an emotional experience. It highlights the joy of learning, the frustration of falling, and the strength that grows when people support one another.
At the same time, the documentary doesn’t shy away from inequality. It addresses the barriers FLINTA* skaters face in a space that has long been dominated by cis-male narratives and shows how community can actively reshape that space into something safer and more inclusive.
The documentary centers around Hanover’s first two FLINTA skate camps*, following participants as they learn, fall, laugh, and build confidence together. These camps become a microcosm of a growing movement: DIY-driven, supportive, and rooted in collective empowerment.
Skateboarding here becomes a safe space, a place where performance matters less than participation, and where trying is already a success.
About the filmmaker
TRY IT is directed by Celine Schaefer, a filmmaker from Hanover whose work moves fluidly between documentary, skateboarding, event films, and commercial projects. Her films are driven by curiosity, closeness to people, and a strong sense of fun – without losing emotional depth.
Why TRY IT matters
TRY IT is not about perfection or tricks landed. It’s about starting, about community, and about reclaiming space. For skaters, filmmakers, and anyone interested in inclusive culture, this documentary is a reminder that sometimes the most radical thing you can do is simply try.
